The latest vintage of the big chicken wines, H.R.M. Rex Goliath, are in the marketplace right now. Just FYI, His Royal Majesty Rex Goliath was the record setting, largest known rooster who weighed in at a finger licking 47 pounds. Whatever drove the winemakers to name their wine after a big chicken (ok rooster) is beyond our understanding but the wine does pass muster and does so with flying colors.
We consider the H.R.M. Rex Goliath to be among the best wine values in the marketplace today. They are very well made and far exceed the quality one might expect from such an affordable price. These wines have taken the highest prizes in many of the wine competition that they have been entered in and that in itself bespeaks the quality.

H.R.M. Rex Goliath Cabernet Sauvignon ($10.99) This wine is a soft cabernet sauvignon that needs no time to age away any rough edges or imperfections; there just are none. The aroma displays cedar and oak, with hints of raspberry, plum, chocolate and currant which carry on to the flavor and to the rather long finish. H.R.M. Rex Goliath Cabernet Sauvignon is an excellent wine at its affordable best and a really fabulous choice for outdoor barbeques and cookouts.

H.R.M. Rex Goliath Pinot Noir ($10.99). The H.R.M. Rex Goliath Pinot Noir is an exception to the unwritten axiom that most of the pinot noir’s below the $15 price range are poor to say the least. This wine however, is a pleasant exception. It is a well-made wine that exhibits all of the properties and charms the grape is capable of without bringing out any of the negative features often found in its less expensive cousins. Big in flavor and dark in color this wine exhibits an open and obvious dark cherry flavor and aroma, coupled with oak and spice. This is a very nice pinot noir and should not be missed.

H.R.M. Rex Goliath Chardonnay ($10.99). This wine is another happy exception to the basic rule of less expensive wines being of low class and lacking quality. While the H.R.M. Rex Goliath Chardonnay may be in the inexpensive category, the wine is nothing at all like many of the others in its price range. The H.R.M. Rex Goliath Chardonnay presents the true and classical chardonnay aromas of apple and pear with a hint of pineapple. In the mouth these aromas give way to tropical fruits and melon which are perfectly combined with mild oak. This is truly an interesting and delightful chardonnay and a perfect choice for those summer time salads and fish fries.

H.R.M. Rex Goliath Sauvignon Blanc ($10.99). Sauvignon Blanc’s come and Sauvignon Blanc’s go but this one will remain in the memory for a long time because of its smoothness and accentuated fruit flavors. This wine adds new interest to a variety that has become humdrum in recent years. The traditional flavors and aromas of citrus and grass, with a hint of melon abound in this wine and are very obvious. They result in an attractive and interesting wine that is the perfect accompaniment for seafood. If you have lost interest in sauvignon blanc in recent years, try the H.R.M. Rex Goliath Sauvignon Blanc; you will be pleasantly surprised.

H.R.M. Rex Goliath Free Range Red ($10.99). Take zinfandel and blend it with syrah and you have H.R.M. Rex Goliath Free Range Red. This is a medium bodied red wine with all of the fruit of a red zinfandel and the finesse and charm of a syrah. The flavors of raspberry and blackberry and a soft spicy background derived from the syrah melds with the bright raspberry of the zinfandel component lead to a wine of character and for a red wine, joy. The beauty of this wine is that it can accompany a huge spectrum of foods from the darkest of meats to the full flavored seafood dishes. This bright and flavorful wine can turn any meal into a banquet.
